It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas. With shopping malls and radio stations already playing “Carol of the Bells” around the clock, there’s really no escaping it. But why not give holiday music a geek twist with the Doctor Who – The Snowmen / The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe soundtrack?
Earlier this month Silva Screen Records released Doctor Who – The Snowmen / The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe, Murray Gold’s immaculately crafted soundtracks to the 2011 and 2012 Doctor Who Christmas specials. While this album is dedicated to the Christmas Specials, not every track is decked with holiday bells and blaring triumphs- and that’s a good thing.
Doctor Who – The Snowmen / The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe soundtrack starts with the score from “The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe.” While this selection offers a variety of songs, “Quiet a Tree” and “Into the Present” are top picks for feeling more festive. One of the collections longer pieces, “Flying Home for Christmas” is a grand piece worthy of The Doctor’s tradition of daring rescues on Christmas Day.
While “The Doctor, The Widow, and the Wardrobe” offers a nice selection of songs, the more memorable ones come from “The Snowmen” collection.Beginning with the cheerful “A Voice in the Snow”, “The Snowmen” quickly transcends beyond classic Christmas melodies to showcase the breath of composer Murray Gold’s talents. Doctor Who “The Snowmen” Christmas Special episode let Who fans experience Clara for the first time (post-Ponds) as her character truly develops and is reflected in Gold’s score.
Pieces like “Clara in the Tardis” and “Clara Lives” are as sweet and joyful as Clara herself and allows listeners to remember why they fell for the Impossible Girl in the first place. However, the most charming track from “The Snowmen” soundtrack is “Sherlock Who?”; a homage to fellow BBC show Sherlock as The 11th Doctor role plays Detective Holmes. Gold blends the musical styles of both shows to perfection and fans of either show will enjoy it. Although not a holiday track, “Sherlock Who?” is easily the highlight of the Christmas album.
