Dowry is the custom of giving money or gift to the bridegroom as an obligation by the bride's family . This is an age -old custom which is a curse for the society . The bride's family is the worts sufferer of this system. Dowry tradition has been going for centuries mainly because of illiteracy, ignorance and the negligence of the poorer section of the society.  

The causes of dowry are not far to seek . First of all illiteracy and ignorance make people pay the dowry money to the bridegroom. On the other hand women are still considered as a burden by many of the society. So when daughter goes to in law's house, her parents want to compensate for the daughter by giving dowry.

We know that there are laws to prevent dowry. But laws hardly come into effect . The victims, being ignorant and helpless , do not know where and how to seek justice. So many dowry cases are not brought to the notice of the law enforcing agencies .As a result the criminals who take dowry remain at large...........
