A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck off Papua New Guinea on Tuesday at a region which is 133 kilometres south-southwest of the town of Kokopo in New Britain. The epicenter was at a depth of 63 kilometres. Hazardous tsunami waves might be possible along the local coast, but it would not have any impact on neighbouring Australia or New Zealand, as claimed by seismologists. The region being mostly uninhabited region off the island of New Britain, there was no major damage of life and property due to the quake.
