The word "education" is derived from the Latin ēducātiō ("A breeding, a bringing up, a rearing") from ēducō ("I educate, I train") which is related to the homonym ēdūcō ("I lead forth, I take out; I raise up, I erect") from ē- ("from, out of") and dūcō ("I lead, I conduct"). Source: Wikipedia

Education in the Modern Time

In our modern time, a child would usually begin going to school at the age of 3 or 4 depending on his/her readiness. Preschool education is already a requirement before a child could be accepted in Primary or elementary school. In the Philippine setting, which adopts the K-12 Curriculum, a student will have to spend 6 years at the Primary level ( Grade 1 to 6), 4 years in Junior High School (Grades 7 to 10) and 2 years in Senior High School (Grades 11 to 12).

An individual could either continue to take up a 4-year course after graduating from Senior High School or can look for a job and be successfully employed. If he/she decided to take up a 4-year course, the total number of years that a person spends in school is 17 years. This is 3 years longer compared to our time wherein the preparatory school was not a requirement and 2 years longer than those who had taken up a preparatory curriculum.

A Brief Backgrounder of the K-12 Program in the Philippines

The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship. The K-12 Program was launched in 2013. My daughter belongs to the last batch of the students under the regular program. The launching of the said program has gained mixed reactions from the Filipino people. Some comments were - the number of years to be spent in the school, the additional amount that the parents would need to spend for the tuition fees and other expenses and other negative reactions

On the other hand, there was also some positive feedback like the student could opt to work after graduating from Senior High School.

K-12 program is now in its 5th year of implementation and so far we are still waiting for the result of the first batch of students who belong to the pioneer class.

What Awaits Us After Graduating from College

After graduating from college, an individual can now apply with the different private corporations and government offices. Other courses would require an individual to take board examinations before they could fully practice their professions. Graduates of the following courses are subject to take a board examination - Bachelor of Science in Education, Engineering, Nursing, Accountancy, etc.

Applying for a job may not be easy especially if the course that an individual chose to pursue does not come with a very specific skill. In some cases,  even those who took up courses with specific profession would opt to work in an office or agency with a different function. Others remain jobless, underemployed or worst, unemployed

Every year, the number of graduates is increasing, so as with the number of unemployed. One of the reasons for unemployment is a mismatch of skill and not because there is not enough work for everyone. That is why a child should be guided properly during the time he/she is contemplating on what course to take up in college.

When I was assigned in the municipality, I often encountered several individuals who are taking up other courses while they are working as Job Order employees. The reason was they realized that the course they had taken up in college will not help them to land a better job. This would mean additional expense and additional years to spend in education.

This is the main reason why I encouraged my daughter, who is now in her 3rd year in college taking up Bachelor of Science in Education, to take up an education course. This is despite the seemingly negative impressions from colleagues and relatives when asked what course she is taking up.

Her response is priceless:

Being a teacher is a noble profession. My Grandmom is a teacher and she was able to produce many different professions. I love to share my knowledge and skills and through teaching, I could practice my speaking ability.  I want to learn and teach other languages in the near future and taking up Bachelor of Education is the best starting point for me.

What Course to Take Up in College to Ensure Success

Are you still contemplating on what you have to take up in college? Or you are now in college but isn't sure if you are in the right direction?

Some of the students nowadays would make decisions based on the influence of peers. Since they developed a close friendly relationship during high school days, they would decide based on what most of their friends are taking up. This would usually lead to some issues when looking for a job.

Ask yourself, what are good at? Identify your greatest skill and focus on it. Learning something you love doing will certainly help you make a right decision.

We should also make some research on what is the current demand.

In-Demand Jobs at Present Time

Would you love to work in the government office or with the private sector?

If we will analyze the current trend without looking first into different reports or surveys, we can say right away that because of the current digital world that we have,  job availability would be mostly related to information technology.

Even government offices are in need of persons who are well versed in terms of technology. Remember, that these offices were using manual systems and they are also upgrading the systems to cope with the modern times.

Personally, I believe that there is quite a large number of job opportunities in our country today.

Here are several sites where you could visit if you are looking for a job in the government:

Department of Labor and Employment

Local Government Academy

Civil Service Commission

Please remember that the basic requirement in order to enter the government service is to pass the Civil Service Examination. We will discuss this in the coming days.

For the list of job availability in the private sectors,  there is a long list of companies where we could submit job applications. We will have that list in the succeeding blog posts.

On the final thought

I always believe that having a quality education is one of the basic requirements to have a successful career.  Unless we won the lottery or probably inherit a large amount of wealth, we cannot achieve success without education. Along with hard work, perseverance, and patience, we can truly achieve success in whatever field we pursue.
