Egypt & Tunisia - Revolutions Lost?

Posted on at

More violence in Egypt and Tunisia has prompted UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to warn of the direct harm and perhaps opportunities being wasted. Are the revolutions reverting to something else, especially in Egypt as inter-communal violence between Muslims and Coptic citizens? Is the violence being orchestrated to undermine the yearning for change? Will this Revolution falter and lose perspective like Gamel Abdel Nasser’s broad Arab revival of some half century earlier? (Above photo) Wasting Opportunity? Authorities and peoples urged not to waste the opportunity created by this year’s democratic revolutions in North Africa. Is the message of the Secretary General. At least 12 people were killed at the weekend in Cairo, Egypt, during clashes between Muslims and Coptic Christians, while in Tunisia fresh protests led to renewed violence and the imposition of an evening curfew. He described the revolutions as “one of the greatest opportunities to advance democracy and human rights in a generation. “This opportunity is precious but at the same time fragile,” he said. “It must be nurtured and carefully handled by the people who created it.” Egypt a Particular Concern The Secretary-General said he was particularly disturbed by the bouts of sectarian violence in Egypt. “After the prolonged display of national unity that led to the peaceful transition of power, it is critical that the Egyptian people maintain that unity of purpose to achieve their democratic aspirations.” The UN chief urged authorities in the two countries to “honour the responsibility and trust they have been given. People went on the streets to call for accountability, democracy, human rights and better prospects… their leaders must work to meet these demands.” Related Reports: ---“Arab Revolutions How Far? - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/arab-revolutions-how-far-by-ambassador-mo/25222 ---“Washington's Egypt Diplomacy-Creep Behind or Hurdle Ahead in Trying To Shape Change” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/washingtons-egypt-diplomacy-creep-behind-or-hurdle-ahead-in-trying-to-shape-change-by-ambassador-mo/24461 ---“Egypt & UNDP – Elections” diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/egyptundp-elections-prepared/26642 By Ambassador Muhamed Sacirbey Face Book at “Diplomatically Incorrect” Twitter - DiplomaticallyX
