Ensure exemplary punishment of Samiul's killers

Mob beatings are nothing new in Bangladesh, even beating to death. In that sense, the killing of 14-year-old Sheikh Mohammed Samiul Alam alias Rajan in Sylhet was not an isolated incident. But the brutality upon the child and angry reaction of the public to the video of the incident, has been stronger than ever before. This is an indication of society's sensitivity. This sensitivity is vital.

Yet the police of the concerned thana in Sylhet initially didn't pay much attention to the incident. The poor and hapless father of Samiul said, when he went to the police station to complain, he was shoved away. This matter must been investigated. The local people caught the main accused in the case and handed him over to the police. The police are reportedly searching for the others.

It is quite clear that the police's efforts are a result of pressure from the media and the public. It is important to ensure that when the expression of public anger gradually fades, legal action against the guilty doesn't fade too.

Samiul's parents are poor, helpless people with no power or influence. It is for the state to ensure that they receive justice. The police have filed a murder case and the police must fight this case effectively. It is their duty to prove the accused guilty. The police must do so with utmost sincerity and the higher authorities must keep an eye on this.

Samiul's cruel murder has enraged the nation. Many have expressed their distrust and dismay in the law enforcement system. This distrust and dismay can only be addressed by ensuring justice through a speedy trial and exemplary punishment.
