Environment Emergencies Ahead of Rio+20, by Ambassador mo

Rapid action is needed to curb resource depletion and ensure human activities do not destroy the environment that supports economies and sustains life according to a new Report "Keeping Track of our Changing Environment: From Rio to Rio+20." The Report highlights changes affecting the planet over the last twenty years in a new compilation of statistical data. The Report, which looks into the current environmental landscape, focuses on relevant statistical data on population, climate change, energy and food security among other key issues. 19 Countries 80% of Global CO2 Emissions: Ron Witt of the United Nations Environment Programs’ (UNEP) Division of Early Warning Assessment observed that “the overall global population growth-rate is slowing even while global population continues to climb.” Fossil Fuel use also continues to rise. Other key issues highlighted by the report include:  Global CO2 emissions continue to rise by a total of about 36 percent since 1992” adding that “80 percent of all of these emissions are coming from just 19 countries;” (See FILM REPORT – “Green House Gasses Record Levels”- diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/greenhouse-gases-record-levels/23825 ).  Ongoing forest loss in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, with a decrease of 300 million hectares of forest areas in the region since 1990; (READ –“Investments in Forests More Benefits – UN Report”– diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/investments-in-forests-more-benefits-un-report-by-ambassador-mo/28713 ).  Diminishing glaciers (Bottom PHOTO Above) which have influenced the current rise in sea-levels, threatening the well-being of approximately one sixth of the world’s population.
