The inter-communal fighting has been only getting worse in South Sudan’s Jonglei State since the country voted for and gained its independence during 2011. There are long standing rivalries between the two tribes, even though both are predominantly Christian. The risk of “ethnic cleansing”/acts of genocide is real, and both UN and South Sudan officials have continued to engage both groups to avert a cycle of more killings and revenge. South Sudan VP Reik Machar Teny addressed thousands of the armed young Lou Nuer, (estimated at 5,000 or more) calling on them to stop the violence and immediately engage in a peaceful dialogue: “When you talk about someone’s mistake, do not commit the same mistake. You can not say that you are going to revenge or destroy a whole community.” The ethnic conflict is further complicated by the involvement of a third tribe, the Dinka, all who are competing for land, cattle and resources.
