Ethnic Killing Unabated in South Sudan, by Ambassador mo

They went in to stop the killing but now UN peacekeepers and South Sudan military are just busy protecting their position - they have had to fortify into the center of a recently abandoned town just to be able to defend their position. The raids started end of last week with killings and burnings of ethnic Murle by Lou Nuer warriors. It is part of a long tribal war over raids and abduction of children and cattle as well as land also involving a third tribe the Dinka. Read – “Ethnic Cleansing in South Sudan” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/ethnic-cleansing-in-south-sudan-by-ambassador-mo/43200 South Sudan has been blaming such inter-communal fighting on its former rulers in Khartoum, Sudan. However, it is evident that this is an ongoing tribal conflict between largely Christian groups. The more likely scenario is that Khartoum may not be unhappy about the chaos, but South Sudan's new government is unable address the dynamics/challenges delivered by recent independence. Some within South Sudan’s tribal/ethnic mosaic may have perceived the recent independence as an opportunity to settle old scores and even more so seize new lands from longtime enemies. Ethnic cleansing may be the goal. (The recent death of General George Athor Deng who initiated a rebellion against South Sudan's new authorities, apparently after he lost elections, also did not seem to smother the growing South Sudan violence). Khartoum may be opportunist or mere innocent bystander, but difficult to see them as central culprit. Although it is not evident what they can do to effectively stop it, both the UN and the new state of South Sudan have assumed the responsibility to protect civilians after steering the country through referendum and independence. So far, at least 50,000 persons are on the move fleeing a rampaging war party of more than 6,000 that has left at least dozens brutally murdered.
