Evaluation of different varieties of citrus in Kohat

Posted on at

Introduction Citrus is a group of several species which come under family Rutaceae. It is not true that all the species which come under family Rutaceae belong to citrus group. Essentially all the species which come under citrus have fruits of Hesperidium type where exocarp and mesocarp fuse to form an inedible rind and the edible portion is endocarp which has juice sacs or juice vesicles in place of pulp. Pakistan ranks first in the production of citrus (FAO, 1988). We are lucky enough that nature endowed Pakistan with wide range of agro- climatic conditions, which permit the production of varieties of both tropical and temperate fruits. The most suitable soil and climatic conditions for citrus cultivation prevail in most of the plain areas of Punjab province. Citrus is a salt sensitive fruit crop (Sykes, 1992). However citrus root stocks differ considerably in their tolerance to salt stress. Citrus fruits particularly kinnow mandarin, Mosambi malta, sour lime and Grape fruit can be grown profitably in the arid tracts having irrigation facilities (Pareek, 1977). Materials and methods A progeny orchard of different citrus fruits has been established at BARS, Kohat. Different characteristics of these fruits are being studied and also used as a foundation source of bud wood for further multiplication. Some fruit varieties are in Juvenile stage and still not in bearing stage. Therefore, further investigation is needed. Citrus fruits are the most important, suitable for the agro-climatic conditions of Kohat division. Twelve (12) varieties have been collected from various research stations and planted in fruit progeny orchard at BARS Kohat for yield evaluation and as mother plants for bud wood. Two to six plants of each variety have been planted in the progeny orchard. High rate of mortality was noticed each year. The gaps were being filled time to time for missing plants during the previous years. Recommended dose of fertilizer was applied in March. Ripcord was sprayed against leaf minor, aphids and other insects while Diethane-M-45 was used against citrus dieback and other diseases. Results and discussion Plants are in transitional stage. Data is being recorded on various parameters such as flower initiation, fruit setting, No. of fruits/plant, fruit yield etc. The available data taken on some of the parameters were tabulated as under: Table-H2 Evaluation of different varieties of citrus in Kohat.
