Ken Burns Somerset, NJ Determination Visited By Kindness Not Once, But Thrice During tough times in our lives, we find the strength to fight on and make the best of what we have. But it’s during these times of struggle that even the simplest of things can become difficult. After arriving to his new job on his first day, Ken Burns asked what he should wear. He was told he could wear anything he wanted, but good and sturdy boots would be essential. Ken cringed inside. In 2009, Ken Burns lost his job of seven years and he has since found it difficult to restart his career. His heat and power had been turned off a few times – the first time being on a cold December night – and his house had been listed for a Sheriff’s sale, as he couldn’t pay his mortgage. Ken had found some odd jobs, but not permanent position that could save his home. In 2013, Ken found steady work in a coffee shop, albeit at only 30 percent of his former income. He added two nights a week in a medical office to supplement his income from the coffee shop. He was able to land another job after a coffee shop customer offered Ken a few hours to work at his gas station. After being told that good and sturdy boots would be essential for the job, Ken cringed inside because he recalled having to use duct tape to keep the sole from falling off his boots – which also were his only pair of boots. He went on an online social media site and posted about his first shift at the gas station and about his worn out shoes he wears each morning to the coffee shop. Ken’s friend, Joanne, messaged him and asked for his shoe size. Ken suspected that her son or husband had an unused pair she might be able to give him. Within the hour, Joanne pulled up to the gas station with a large box. She had purchased a new pair of brand-name steel-toe boots along with several pairs of thick work socks for him. Joanne had also included the receipt in case any changes were needed. Joanne’s grand gesture of kindness made Ken cry. The boots kept Ken’s feet safe from the bitter cold which was especially needed a few days later when a tremendous snow and ice storm hit. Ken said his shoes would have never survived the abuse of working in a gas station, particularly in the winter. “I can’t imagine how to fully thank Joanne for her act of kindness,” Ken said. Ken said he has learned to appreciate many small and compassionate gestures. but Joanne’s act of kindness was huge for him. “It took time, money, and thoughtfulness to deliver this gift,” he said. “I remain overwhelmed, and my feet remain safe.” “Being hit with a Kindness Boomerang can change your life, and I welcome each time it happens, because it reminds me that someone notices and someone cares.”
