Today I wan to talk on a very sensitive and serious issue, “examinations”. Exams as we know it are taken to test our knowledege and a means of measuring our understanding of different things. Or more specifically exams are defined as a series of question we are required to answer either verbally or non verbally.
The examinations are mostly very scary to all most all the students because of their suspicious nature. No one know how it is going to be and what would be our score in them. Sometimes it also becomes a competition among the exam takers to score higher than eachother which is a quite thrilling and interesting factor of this devil.
The reason I m writing about exams is that I am suffering from them these days and it has made me mentally sick. All the tensions and worries of paper is quite a frustration.
Since childhood we all have been giving exams and we must have noticed that exams are merely a test of our memorization ability. Exams these days do not judge our level of understanding and knowledge. For high score we must memorize each and every minute detail and must leave the conceps behind. We derive equations memorize them and don’t even know why were these equations formulated by someone and how we can implement them. The paper would only ask derive this and that equation. What it should have done is that paper must have given the equation and asked us what does it mean , for what purpose this equation can be used. This is what happened with me. There were derivations and derivations so lengthy and tedious but merely of any use.
Even if you look back in your childhood you will find countless such examples. For example many times in my schooling I encountered questions like , Where was Ali going ? Ali was going to the park, where was his mother? She went to the market, bla bla bla. I don’t even remember them now and seem quite useless to me. I don’t know what is the logic behind such memory testing questions. No one remembers the material reproduced in that paper even at that evening. So why we encounter such questions ?? why don’t the educationists formulate the exams system in a manner more sophisticated and concept oriented ?.
