Facts about Birds
Ø Birds are warm-blooded vertebrates with feathers and a beak.
Ø Female birds lay eggs. No bird species gives birth to live young.
Ø Numerous birds are extremely intelligent, some use tools and cultivate a type of culture by passing knowledge among multiple generations.
Ø Most birds fly, but some swim, and others run very fast. Some birds are able to fly (even if only for a short distance), but choose to run such as, the roadrunner.
Ø Humans utilize birds as a source of food (meat and eggs) and their feces (guano) as a non-toxic fertilizer for plants. Humans also domesticate birds as pets for personal enjoyment.
Ø Several hundred species of birds have become extinct, and over a thousand species are endangered of becoming extinct because of human activity (typically destroying bird's home and food source because of expansion). The whole planet Earth is not large enough for humans to share with animals.
Ø Flamingos are born with gray feathers, but the color turns to pink because of their diet, which consists of brine-shrimp and blue-green algae.
Ø There is an active debate questioning if birds are reptiles because they are close descendants of dinosaurs. Recently, certain reptiles have been discovered to be warm-blooded, such as a lizard called, Algerian black and white tegu. Some studies suggest dinosaurs were both cold-blooded and warm-blooded. Many people feel a bird is not a reptile simply because they are descendants of dinosaurs, in the same way an amphibian is not a fish simply because an amphibian is a descendant of fish.
