Family planning is a term that refers to restriction on the number of children and intervals between their births so that there may be an adjustment in the size of family and income of family. Population of the world is increasing significantly day by day. If there is no check on the increase of rate of birth, the result will be very calamitous. With the present growth rate of population, Pakistan is expected to have a population of 240 million by 2025 as against as against 186 million today. This would offset all economic growth. There is already food shortage in Pakistan. As a result, the people will be unable to feed themselves properly. Hence it has become necessary to keep a check on population.
The objective of family planning is simple but its implementation is very difficult. First, boys and girls in Pakistan marry very early and start producing children till the number transcends half a dozen. Most of the people marry twice or thrice, making the number still greater. Thus, they fail to provide their family with food, clothing and other basic needs. Secondly, most of the people of our country are illiterate. They are hesitant to discuss matters relating to sexual relations. Furthermore, they look upon the birth of a child as the inevitable ordain of God, and even a blessing from Above. What is most needed is education among them so that they may realize the importance of Family Planning.
To administer Family Planning we can use many methods. We should adopt the system of late marriages. First, boys and girls should marry when they feel that they can maintain their families at a good standard of living. Secondly, the couples should use the birth control medicines to control birth. In this respect they can consult some family planning center. Thirdly, parents should guide their children before their marriage. Lastly, one should have a full control over himself/herself. Self-control is the best way.
Government of Pakistan is making sincere efforts regarding this matter. A family planning program has been set up on large scale. Centers have been set up to provide free advice to people. Necessary medicines are being distributed among the people of villagers. If this program works properly, the country would be flourishing in near future.
