As I was getting ready to write off the "Fast and Furious" franchise as one too many "Fast and Furious" movies, along comes "Fast and Furious 6," perhaps the best film of the franchise, and the biggest Universal moneymaker debut...ever.

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Tyrese, Dwayne Johnson, and Michele Rodriguez, "Fast and Furious 6" sped to the top of the box-office heap with $120 million domestically and $158 million internationally -- the biggest opening for a Universal Pictures release.

And the film stopped "The Hangover Part III" to debut on top. The threequel opened at No. 2 with a still-respectable $51.2 million. Billed as the last "Hangover" ever with the original cast (Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, and Ken Jeong), the film is somewhat saved by its irreverent end-of-credits treasure that truly captured the spirit of the franchise.

The two new releases together with the animated flick "Epic" (No. 4 at $42.6 million), "Star Trek Into Darkness" (No. 3 with $47 million), and "Iron Man 3" (No. 5 with $24.4 million), helped make this Memorial Day weekend the biggest, record-breaking four-day weekend with $316 million total!

Hurray for Hollywood!
