Like the chubby political Barbarian of yore, Newt Gingrich was swinging the ball and mace in retaliation for what he saw as the many unkind verbal slashes and his disappointing loss in Iowa. He sought his revenge against Mitt Romney and the “un-warrior jedi” Ron Paul. The more he spoke though, the more his swings came back to wound him like an awkwardly swung wallop. Newt was swinging against something that his Republican allies and he had long championed – unlimited campaign spending including through proxies or “super pacs” that could be funded by wealthy third persons including such non-people as corporations without any limits that may apply to the actual candidates and their campaign treasuries. Mitt Romney employed the mechanism, through the not so unrecognizable proxies, to tear into Newt Gingrich, just as Newt though he might sneak up to the throne in the costume of the jester. Newt had been playing the role of cheerleader in chief by promoting that all Republicans should only attack Obama and Party. It worked for a while and made him seem exactly the type of “team player” the conservative right wanted to gang-up on Obama. However, Mitt Romney was not going to allow Gingrich to grab the Republican crown through disguise of head cheerleader. Newt had almost convinced them that he had reformed and could contain himself and fire-spewing tongue. Today’s verdict on the new Newt is like the old Newt. His broad wallops have brought rebukes from the Republican establishment to Fox News. Not even Newt’s friends were particularly fond of old Newt. The Fat Lady has sung on his Presidential campaign.
