February's new moon is both a black moon and supermoon

Posted on at

There's full moons, new moons, super moons, even blue moons and wait here's another one on Wednesday, February 18th you could see drum roll please: a black moon!

Each season typically has three new moons in a three month period. Sometimes a season like this winter has four new moons, the third one is called a black moon. This black moon also qualifies as a supermoon. Weather.com reports, "The lunar body qualifies as a 'supermoon' since it is new and will be on it's closest approach to Earth during orbit."

A black moon can look very dark so, keep an eye out for the thin crescent sliver that shines through before or after the event.
