Fiji covers a total area of some 194,000 square kilometers of which around 10% is land. Fiji is an island country in Melanesia in the South Pacific Ocean about 1100 nautical miles northeast of New Zealand’s North Island. It comprises an island chain of about 18,300 square kilometers. Consists of more than 332 islands, of which 110 are permanently inhabited, and more than 500 inlands. Fiji has one of the most developed economies in the Pacific island realm due to an abundance of forest, mineral, and fish resources. The main sources available here is sugar exports and tourist industry. Voyaging traders and settlers from the west started the first settlements in Fiji about 5000 years ago. Politics in Fiji normally take place in the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic where in the prime minister of Fiji is the head of government and the president the head of state. Citizens of Fiji are referred to as “Fiji islanders”. In addition, the term Fiji nationals is used for official purposes. In Fijians, most of them are Hindu or Muslim and about 40% are Christian. The climate in Fiji is tropical marine and warm year round with minimal extremes. Rainfall is variable. Winds are moderate, though cyclones occur about once a year.
