WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE WORLD OF ENTERTAINMENT?
HBO’S JOHN ADAMS WIND 13 EMMYS
HBO’s mini-series about the second president of the United States, namely John Adams, won 13 awards last weekend at the 60th ceremony of the Emmy Awards. Peter Aspden from the Financial Times calls John Adams a TV show that makes someone proud to be an American and sees this as a radical departure for HBO. Looking back at other HBO series, one can hardly feel this way and be assured to follow the American Dream. From watching shows like The Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm, it seems like the average audience is used to extreme mockery and a corrupted portrayal of America.

So, we decided to interview Bettini about how he chose this profession and where he sees journalism in a few years.

WHAT SHOULD I WATCH ON FILM ANNEX?
REEFER MADNESS
In this week’s Classic by Louis J. Gasnier, you will watch the detrimental effects of marijuana on the innocent, declining youth. Highly controversial during mid-30’s, Reefer Madness lets you decide whether it’s a parody on good old-fashioned America or a serious criticism of this drug’s use.
Synopsis: Reefer Madness was a propaganda film that relates the story, as told by high school principal Dr. Carroll to parents at a PTA meeting, of the scourge of marijuana. The tale revolves around Mae and Jack, accomplices in the distribution of marijuana, who manage to entice the local high school kids to stop by Mae's apartment to smoke reefer. The lives of all who are involved with this menace are inevitably shattered. One youngster becomes so addicted to the killer weed that a judge orders him to be committed for life to a mental hospital! Dr. Carroll advises us to not incur the same tragedy.

EYE CONTACT
Eye Contact is a stop motion animation shot with an old bolex on 16 mm film. It's both wacky and dark, but then again, isn't everything?

PRISONER OF SPLENDOR
Synopsis: Tony Taste is a big man in every sense of the word. Entrepreneur, master chef, TV star, and gourmand extraordinaire, he rules the world of food and media. But the man who built this success is himself a media creation, fueled by ambition and more than a few lies.
Now at the height of his powers, his weight, the most apparent incarnation of his greed, threatens to destroy all he has built. Needing a loan to cover overly ambitious expansion plans, Tony is forced by a cautious bank to get into shape or go away empty handed. Never shrinking from any challenge, Tony rises to the occasion and gets the loan, but in the process his all consuming character leads him down a path of addiction and obsession. Prisoner of Splendor skewers our collective fascination with food, TV and personalities who themselves are being devoured by the gluttonous media machine.

CHOKE
“Victor Mancini, a medical-school dropout, is an antihero for our deranged times. Needing to pay elder care for his mother, Victor has devised an ingenious scam: he pretends to choke on pieces of food while dining in upscale restaurants. He then allows himself to be "saved" by fellow patrons who, feeling responsible for Victor's life, go on to send checks to support him. When he's not pulling this stunt, Victor cruises sexual addiction recovery workshops for action, visits his addled mom, and spends his days working at a colonial theme park.” Check out more info at:
