The main event of The International 5 will take place in Seattle, Washington from August 3rd through 8th, and it will feature 16 teams. The invitations will occur in May 2015, the same month as the tournament's regional qualifiers.
We may still be in the second week of the new year, but Valve is already at work for the organization of The International 5. Through a blog post on the official DotA2 website, the company released the first details on the prestigious competitions, to assist those who want to make their travel plans ahead of time.
According to the blog post :
- The TI5 main event will take place in Seattle, Washington.
- The main event will take place in August, from 3rd through 8th.
- Sixteen (16) teams will make it to the main event this year (compared to last year's eight).
- The tournament invitations will occur early in May.
While most of the information above was already known, the change in the number of participants is new and interesting. It seems that Valve decided to reinstate the system of the first three internationals, with the results of the preliminary groupstage dictating which teams get placed in the Upper and Lower bracket. This system also guarantees that every team gets to see play in the tournament's main stage, unlike 2014 when eight squads were eliminated before they reach Key Arena.
