First things first - how I got into the industry

Posted on at

So as this is my first blog post, I thought i'd take the time to talk about myself first.

I went to Staffordshire University where I studied Media Production, which was predominantly a short film making course.

During my time at university I also did some work experience at MUTV, Manchester United's television channel where I was soon operating their studio cameras and also doing some of the lesser jobs such as running and answering the phones. After the weeks work experience they brought me back as a freelancer and so for the remained of my time at uni I was also working once or twice a week in the broadcast industry.

When a company wants to put on a live event out in the field they use an outside broadcast facilities company, who basically provide everything needed to get a program live on air. MUTV currently has a contract with a facilities company called Cloudbass (www.cloudbass.com). One day whilst running at an MUTV outside broadcast (OB) I started talking to a Cloudbass employee and very openly asked about the possibility of getting some work experience or even freelance work with them and sure enough the guy put in a phone call then and there, and within a few weeks I was doing some freelance editing for them.

So I continued to work 2 different freelance jobs, all whilst doing my university course, and when I came to graduate Cloudbass offered me a full time job starting as a Broadcast Operator for them.

Some might say I was lucky to get a job straight after uni, but I would argue it was a lot of hard work and determination making sure I was heading in the direction I wanted and it can all be traced back to me making a good impression during a weeks work experience with a company. So to any budding people out there I would say to make the most out of any work experience you can get, and really push to learn more, show enthusiasm and you should get the break you deserve.
