I was nominated to take part in the 5 money saving tips challenge by &vatightwad.
So, here is my contribution:
1. Join some money saving sites such as Savingstar or Snap by groupon. These sites will reimburse you for purchasing groceries. All you have to do is sign up and they will instruct you how to redeem for your purchases. Some will have you enter your loyalty card into their data base and some will have you submit a receipt for approval. Either way, if you are willing to do a little work, you might as well get money back.
2. Don't wait until next Christmas to shop when things are more expensive There are still deals to be had on gift sets, Christmas wrapping paper etc. that can be stored away for next year. I have amassed a lot of things over the past several years that I can give as gifts each year. It is worth not having to spend twice as much come next Christmas.
3. Drink more water. It's amazing what you can spend on unhealthy sodas. It all adds up. I spend 35 cents a gallon for water and use it to cook with as well as for drinking. We go through about 6 gallons of water a week and we also give it to the dog and birds to drink instead of our cistern water.
4.Rent movies instead of going out. Redbox movies are only $1.25 or so to rent. If you sign up for their text reward program you can even get promo codes for free movie rentals once in awhile or even a buy one get one free offer.
5. Plan meals around your grocery store flyer. Check out what's on sale and create and plan your meals around what you can buy for cheap. Also, you can utilize those money saving sites. There are a lot of times you can get things on sale and also get money back too if you are diligent about comparing the grocery store flyers and the saving site offers. For example, I just got a bunch of Kale for only 54 cents because my store had it on sale for 79 cents and my grocery store App offered another 25 cents off. I like to make Kale chips!
