ITALY and UNESCO agreed to collaborate in restoring the Roman era resort town which was frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The historic site had been badly damaged last year by heavy rains and floods. Restoration is expected to be completed within the year. (Several archeological treasures, including the Schola Armaturarum (Gladiators’ House) and the House of the Moralist, collapsed in November 2010). UNESCO will provide expert advice to the Italian Government on how to improve the conservation of the site, in keeping with the recommendations of the World Heritage Committee The Archaeological Areas of Pompeii, Herculaneum and Torre Annunziata have been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List since 1997. .
