Floating Bar Located 2 Miles from Foundation

It’s been over a week since Hurricane Sandy struck the tri-state area yet millions are still feeling the impacts. A Brooklyn marine pub was swept off its structure and was located two miles away! The well-stocked bar landed on a residential street just outside the front door of Michael Sarrells. Another bar was lifted from its foundation in Mill basis during the storm and drifted in Savollen Deep Creek Bay past the Belt Parkway.

When the bar finally hit land residents in Gerritsen Beach discovered its chairs, tables and a variety of booze was still in good shape.  “Sandy Bar” was written across the structure in large red marker and opened it as a make-shift bar to the survivors! Soon after the alcohol ran out a generator was provided to keep the party going for days.  The party lasted through Saturday when cops and sanitation workers arrived and closed down the makeshift pub for safety reasons.

With the bar gone and reality settling in after the storm, residents were burning damaged furniture and cardboard in a barrel to stay warm. It is unclear when this devastated beach community will get its power back.
