Fourth Generation Computers (1975 To Present)
After the fourth generation computers the next generation of computers is fifth generation that was introduced.
Fourth Generation Computers Review
Fourth generation computers were firstly introduced in 1971.After the integrated circuits the ‘Micro processor’ was introduced This is the generation where we are working today. The computers which we see around us belong to the fourth generation computers. ‘Micro processor’ is the main concept behind this generation of computer. IBM introduced its personal computer for use in 1981.The number of personal computers in use 2 million in 1982 and increased to 5.5 million in 1982. Macintosh introduced an operating system that allowed users to move screen icons instead of instructions. As smaller computers become more powerful, they could be linked together or networked to share memory space, software information and communicate with each other. These computers perform their work effectively and in batter way as compared to old generations. These computers made possible two develop internet for connections.
Micro Processor's Review:
Advantages Of Fourth Generation Computers:
The main advantages of fourth generation computers are as fallows.
- Smaller in size
- Very reliable
- Heat generation is low
- No air conditioning required in most cases
- Much faster in previous
- Hardware failure is minor
- Easily portable because of small size
- Totally general purpose
- Big memory
- Cheapest among all generations
Disadvantages Of Fourth Generation Computers:
- Highly difficult technology is required for manufacturing of microprocessor chip
Examples OF Fourth Generation Computers
IBM 4341, DEC 10, STAR 1000, PUP 11 and APPLE II are the examples of fourth generation computers.
