MONTREAL – A recent chat with Francis Ford Coppola confirmed my long-held belief that the more iconic the artist, the more open, friendly and accommodating they are in interview. The Oscar-winning director of The Godfather and Apocalypse Now was on the phone a couple of weeks back from his home in the Napa Valley at 9 a.m. his time, and he couldn’t have been more chatty. A 15-minute time slot expanded to more than a half-hour, and the legendary U.S. filmmaker touched on everything from his winemaking prowess to the enduring appeal of America’s most famous mob flick.

Of course, Coppola had good reason to be on his best behaviour. He has a film to hawk, Tetro, an entirely self-financed indie project that Coppola released himself in the U.S. earlier this summer. He doesn’t have the big studio marketing machine behind this mostly black-and-white film about two feuding brothers whose complex, conflicted relationship comes to a head in Buenos Aires. That means he has to drum up his own publicity, which is why he’s been unusually open to talking to the media.
