future of pakistan

“It was a great political struggle which made the dream of Pakistan come true”. These are the words, came in my mind before writing this article and made me think about the Politics, creation of Pakistan and aim behind it.

Politics is the art of creating an ideal (dreamed) society. In his book "Blackwell Encyclopedia of Political Thought", Miller states:

"Politics presupposes a diversity of view, if not about ultimate aims, at least the best ways of achieving them".

Those who struggled for peaceful societies, brought happiness, prosperity and freedom for the citizens were also politicians. And governments in those societies are working for the welfare and development of their people and states. But when we talk about Pakistan, it has been facing dirty and degenerated politics, dominated by the elites and corrupt people----a few families---since its birth. Absence of electoral process, weak political institutions, gap between the public and the government, and trust deficit are some of the features of Pakistan’s political sector.

"Musalmans are a nation according to any definition of a nation, and they must have their homelands, their territory and their State. We wish to live in peace and harmony with our neighbors as a free and independent people. We wish our people to develop to the fullest our spiritual, cultural, economic social, and political life in a way that we think best, and in consonance with our own ideals and according to the genius of our people”, these are the words of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah----a great political leader---describing the dream, which was dreamt by those people struggled for a separate territory for the Muslims.

The future of a country can be predicted on the basis of three elements: educational growth and structure, political environment and economic condition. On the one hand, Political stability and Economic growth are directly related to each other in a territory. Unstable political environment may reduce investment and the speed of economic development or poor economic performance may lead to government collapse and political unrest. On the other hand, political stability and economic boom, both are deeply interconnected with educational development.  If a state works more on education, it will bring social and political awareness--- leading to national political development; changing behavior and approach of the people to the politics--- in the society and produce skilled population, so as a result the territory will become politically more stable and economically more prosperous. So, the education is the key to economic growth and political development & stability.

The economic growth means the better standard of living of a country, better international relations, and better defensive position, independence from the dominance of other developed states on the trade, independent decisions, no terrorism, no fear and more secure position. Fact and figures shows that the countries (some of them got freedom or declared as an independent state even after Pakistan) with lower GNIs (lower living standards) and depressed economy, grew rapidly and now they are part of the developing or developed word. But Pakistan is still under developing state.

It means that they are more politically stable now and this success is achieved only by educational development. Unfortunately, Pakistan is the victim of political instability and its infinite problems---like unemployment, corruption, unequal distribution of wealth and increasing inflation rate etc. (the depressed economy) --- due to the low level of public investment in education sector. Pakistan has one of the lowest rates of literacy in the world and the lowest among countries of comparative resources and socio-economic situations.

According to Qauid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah---mentioned above--- our goal was to build a peaceful society with social, economic and Political Development. We are totally failed in achieving the goal and the reason is very clear that some elites--- dominant families, the only hurdle in the growth and Prosperity--- never wanted the awareness of the people. We are not independent till now in true sense, we are living under the dominance of few families, who ruined the state’s political, economic and educational system and values.

At present as we see, the increasing literacy rate ( 20% from 1990 to 14) has also increased challenges for them and changed the approach of the people to the politics in Pakistan. But the literacy rate is growing very slowly as compared to other world and reason behind this is “the spending on education by the government of Pakistan”, which was remained almost same (near about 2% of GDP) in last four decades. The spending on education by India was less than Pakistan before 1998, so its economic condition was also worse than Pakistan at that time (see chart: GNI per capita 1990). But after 1998 India’s investment in education was increased to 4% of GDP.  Now literacy rate of India is more than 60% and its per capita GNI is more than Pakistan’s, which shows that they are now politically and economically more strengthen and their living standard is improved.

Pakistan’s educational structure needs reforms at a large scale. “Political influence and corruption in education departments, inequality between public and private education sectors--- causing discrimination among students---, lack of technical education and allocation of funds’’ are the main factors of the poor literacy in the country. These reforms cannot be done by the government alone, public-private participation and a mix of formal as well as non-formal education can pull out majority of country’s population from illiteracy. Similarly, to make the youth of the country an asset, attention should also be paid to vocational and technical training.

If education developing speed remains same in Pakistan, then it will take nearly 40 to 50 years for the complete political awareness & stability and economic prosperity in country. If current or upcoming government sets new planning and invests more in this sector then the dream of a politically stable and socially & economically prosperous Pakistan could become true in coming 2 to 3 decades.

All threats to the future of Pakistan like; war & terror, economic depression (unemployment and inflation), inequality, trade problems etc. can only be eradicated by stabilizing the Politics in state through developing the education.
