As go the snows of Kilimanjaro (sorry, Hemingway), so go its glaciers. During this year's "long rains" season, from March to May, the summit of Tanzania's tallest peak received only 8 inches of snow, and that's no way to sustain a glacier. Kilimanjaro's glaciers are diminutive — their areas are measured in acres, their thickness in single-digit meters — and shrinking rapidly. So book now if you want to make the trek to see the last of Africa's permanent ice.
