GPS equipment is capable of measuring a position to within centimeters but the accuracy
suffers due to errors in the satellite signals. Errors in the signal can be caused by atmospheric
interference, proximity of mountains, trees, or tall buildings. The government can also introduce
errors in the signal for security purposes. This intentional degradation of the satellite signals is
known as selective availability.
