ORIGIN AND GROWTH OF RAILWAYS
The history of transport is as old as that of man himself. The modern railway was a development of the horse-drawn wagon or tramway, used in England in sixteenth to eighteenth centuries for haulage of minerals to reivers or ports. As the roads were bad and weagons had to be guided through tunnels, some one thought of laying down wooden planks for the wheels to run on.The planks wore out quickly and then someone else put iron plates to nail them down to reduce wear. Thus came to first 'plate ways'.The wooden planks and wheels were later replaced with those iron roads i.e 'Rails' .It reduced wear and enabled much heavier loads ro be pulled. The first railway built for general use on payement of fee or toll was the horse-drawn surrey Iron Railway from Wandsworth to Groydon and Carshalton, which was opened in 1804.The Napoleonic was took away the horses and Richard Trevithick (1771-18833) designed a steam engine mounted on wheels which generated sufficient power to move it.This ultinately spelled the exit of the horse and the entrance of the steam engine which was later replaced by the diesel and electric locomotives in the '20' century.

(In USA, people termed as railroad as well as railway. Often, there is more than one set of tracks on the railway line especially on stations. The rails are supported by cross pieces set at regular intervals (called sleepers or ties), which spread the high pressure load imposed by the train wheels into the ground. They also maintain the rails at a fixed distance apart (called the gauge).
RAILWAY HAND CRANES
