Every woman whats long beautiful nails. Some are blessed with them, others buy them and glue them on. Have you why is it so hard to grow long gorgeous nails? Here is a shocker, nails don't grow.the nail root grows, hidden under the cuticle.
Start at the root of the problem
The cells at the root of the nail grow and push out the old nail cells. The old cells turn flat and hard. The old cells then slide along the nail bed which is the flat surface under your nails. There are tiny blood vessels that are under the nail bed, and that gives it the nice shiny color
As seen below, the nail meets the skin at the cuticle. Its job is to protect the new nail as it stars to slide out of the root. The area right past the cuticle is called the lunula which is the visible part of our nail root.
The dead cells take a long time to harden, you get about 1/10 of an inch a month. So getting completely healthy nails takes some time. In fact, it takes about 3 to 6 months for an entire nail to grow out.
How do we make them longer?
Now that we understand how the nails form, let's look at some tips on how to get them longer!
- Moisturize- Although there isn't very much as far as proof that moisturizing the cuticle s will make them longer nails, if it's healthier then it will be ready to do its job protecting the nail.
- Stop cutting and manipulating your cuticles- When you trim your cuticles, you risk breaking the seal that protects the surrounding skin from infection. This can also damage the nail root, and as we learned you have to have a healthy root to have a healthy nail.
- Try not to use nail hardeners- Most of these hardeners do more damage than anything else. So unless your nails are super weak stay away from them.
- Take biotin and keratin supplements- These will help your nails grow thicker and healthier.
- Say no to the mani- I understand this one is going to hard but it has been proven that people who had regular professional manicures suffer from more infections and damage to their nail bed. They have also found that they are more likely to have dry brittle nails.
- Use non-acetone polish removers- Acetone will dry out your nails, this causes them to be brittle. Brittle nails break easier.
- Watch the hand soap and shampoo you use - I know you have probably thought about the hand soap, but pay attention to the shampoo you use too. If you use products for oily hair you could be stripping the oils from your nail beds too.
