Detectives in a drive arrested an alleged gunrunner along with two revolvers, one pistol and 1,000 bullets from the city’s Sabujbagh area early Thursday.
The arrestee was identified as M Saifullah Khan, 40.
Tipped off, a special team of the Detective Branch (DB), led by two assistant commissioners -- Asaduzzaman and Abul Kalam Azad --launched a drive at the office of mobile servicing engineer association of Bangladesh adjacent to Kadamtali Bridge at Purba Basabo around 3:30am and arrested Saifullah along with firearms and ammunition, said DB joint commissioner Monirul Islam of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
During a primary investigation, Saifullah reportedly confessed to the law enforces that the firearms were kept in the office in a bid to kill a political leader and carry out subversive activities in the city.
Deputy Commissioners Jahangir Hossain and Krisnapad Roy of DB police were, among others, present at the press briefing.
