Health Benefits of Garlic

Posted on at

1. High blood pressure - Some studies report that garlic can reduce the blood pressure in hypertensive patients by as much as 7%.

2. Heart Disease – As we age, our arteries tend to stiffen and this can lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Garlic appears to thin the blood, an effect similar to aspirin.

3. High cholesterol – Many studies have been done to determine the effect of garlic on cholesterol and triglyceride levels (fats in the body). So far, the results are not unanimous. Future studies may clarify this claim.

4. Cancer of the stomach, colon, rectum and prostate – Increasing the intake of garlic seems to lower the risk of getting these types of cancer.

5. Fungal infections of the skin – A study shows that applying a gel made of garlic improved skin conditions such as ringworm, jock itch and athlete’s foot.

Warning on Side Effects:
1. Fresh garlic may cause bleeding in certain people with stomach problems, ulcer, during surgery and dental procedures. Since garlic seems to thin the blood, you should stop eating garlic two weeks before a scheduled surgery.
2. Garlic is safe for pregnant women and children when taken in the usual amounts with food.
3. Eat a maximum of 2-3 cloves (butil) of garlic a day, lightly cooked is best.

In summary, it’s okay to eat garlic. Just don’t overdo it. You still need to see your doctor for your medical condition.
