Following the deterioration of the security situation in the northeastern Syrian city of Hassakeh, which resulted in massive displacement of the population inside the city and to other districts in the governorate, Action Against Hunger initialized its emergency response in collaboration with the water, sanitation, and hygiene team of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent-Hassakeh Branch. The response focused on providing access to safe drinking water, cleaning materials, and sanitation facilities to vulnerable displaced families.

We started trucking water to ensure access to safe drinking water for people who fled their homes due to conflict in the city, targeting 41 collective shelters and 3 parks. So far, 116,500 gallons of water have been provided to 4,900 people. To support the storage capacity in the shelter sites for internally displaced people, Action Against Hunger, in coordination with Syrian Arab Red Crescent-Hassakeh, installed 27 water tanks with a capacity of 264 gallons in 10 collective shelters and 3 parks. In addition, we distributed 300 water cans that can hold over 6 gallons to sustain households' access to water.

With the aim of ensuring basic hygiene and cleaning standards in the sites, we complemented the efforts of SARC Hassakeh with the distribution of cleaning kits to 450 families. We will continue our efforts with the SARC team throughout the emergency and population displacement with access to water, hygiene, and rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities at the shelter sites.
