Halfway around the Globe from the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Yemen two South American journalists, Julio Castillo Narvaez of Viru, Peru, and Valerio Nascimento, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, met violent deaths. Ironically, both men lost their lives as the United Nations was celebrating “World Press Freedom Day.” Mr. Narvaez was an outspoken producer and host of the news program, “Radio Ollantay.” Gunned down, his assailants remain unknown and at-large. From Reporters Without Borders: “According to the Lima-based Press and Society Institute (IPYS), Castillo had accused Herbert Jiménez Urquiaga, a member of the regional council, and his wife of involvement in a dubious real estate deal. His allegations had been followed by an act of vandalism against Radio Ollantay. The station reacted by unsuccessfully requesting police protection for its premises and staff.” The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) voiced reaction and condemnation through its Director-General Irina Bokova. The foundation of democracy and cornerstone of human dignity is born from freedom of expression. “This crime is an attack on the basic human right of journalists and citizens to speak their mind and hold free debates about issues that concern them,” Ms. Bokova said. On World Press Freedom Day, UNESCO awarded the UNESCO/Guillermo Cano Press Freedom honor to Ahmad Zeidabadi. Mr Zeidabadi is an Iranian journalist who remains imprisoned. To the seekers of truth, justice, freedom of expression, and open societies, and to those who act upon these principles, you are our Heroes and we salute you. -----By, Susan Sacirbey Face Book: DiplomaticallyIncorrect and Diplomat Artist Twitter: DiplomaticallyX More Reports: “Press Freedom More Relevant Than Ever in Digital Era, UN Stresses,” By, Ambassador Mo diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/press-freedom-more-relevant-than-ever-in-digital-era-un-stresses/27714 ---“Attacks on Press” – diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/attacks-on-press/24719 ---“Attacks on WikiLeaks/UN Human Rights Commissioner” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/wikileaksun-human-rights-commissioner/23505
