Thanks to the help of a brave stranger, 1-year-old Tabrina Ferrell was saved from a grim fate on the subway tracks at Times Square on Sunday.
The baby’s grandmother, Pamela Ferrell, 49, was lifting her granddaughter’s stroller out of the shuttle train and onto the platform with the assistance of another commuter.
Unfortunately, the gentleman lifted the stroller one-handed, causing it to dip forward and slide tiny Tabrina under the train and onto the tracks.
Riders stretched their arms into the breach to pull her out but were unable to reach her.
Finally, 54-year-old Herman McGarrah climbed down through the gap and wriggled along the tracks a few feet to grab Tabrina and carry her to safety.
In an interview with New York Daily News, McGarrah shared,
When I got down there, it was dirty, I was scared, I was kind of shaking… Once I got down there, I said ‘Please God, don’t let the train move.’
The East Harlem resident saw the heroic act as a way to vindicate himself after struggling for years with drug addiction, criminal activity and, at times, homelessness.
He said,
My life hasn’t been in vain.
As for Tabrina, her mother, Tacora Ferrell, claims she is “walking, dancing and playing.”
