One of the only dive bars left in the Meatpacking District Hogs and Heifers Saloon is closing its doors this month because of skyrocketing rent. The new buildings owners want $60,000 a month to lease the space. Owner Michelle Dell is preparing for the final last call on August 23.
Dell recalls when the bar first opened its doors in 1992 when it was full of transvestite hookers before the locals and slumming celebrities and tourists started to roll in. Some of the famous celebrities that stopped by the bar were Sir Paul McCartney, who has danced on the bar. The late James Gandolfini used to shoot pall with the regulars. Dell has also kicked out an under-age Leonardo DiCaprio. Former Baltimore Ravens star Tony Siragosa also visited.
