Not the first time we talked about Facebook on the site, however reviewing previous posts, I realized we’ve never explained how using an instant messaging (Pidgin in this case) we can use this network.
Note: Below is an article over set up Pidgin for Facebook or lets say configure pidgin for facebook. Some may take it as a Pidgin Facebook Plugin.
There are few users who have an account on Facebook yet we are not exactly addicted far.Many of Facebook all we want is our chat with acquaintances, as we have no interest in feeding animals on a farm, knowing our daily horoscope, etc: D
For users as describe, we are interested only chat fortunately our instant messaging applications such as Pidgin (Kopete, Empathy, etc) have support for Facebook chat.
How to use Facebook chat with Pidgin
1. First, obviously, we must install Pidgin in distro:
If you use ArchLinux , Chakra or some derivative:
sudo pacman-S pidgin
If you use Debian , Ubuntu or derivative:
sudo apt-get install pidgin
2. then we must open Pidgin and go to Accounts – “Manage Accounts :
3. Here we select the button Add
4. We see a window in which we must establish the following:
This is important to clarify with regard to ” Username “. This field must specify the following to the last / in the URL of our profile on Facebook. For example, the URL of my profile in Facebook is www.facebook.com/ kzkggaara so in username would kzkggaara … another example, suppose the URL to my profile www.facebook .com / Alejandro.DesdeLinux.Website … then, what would be the user? indeed be Alejandro.DesdeLinux.Website
Add Account to Use Facebook Chat with Pidgin
5. Then we click on the button Add and ready, we will connect and display the list of friends
And ready, so using these facebook Pidgin Settings, avoid opening and wasting bandwidth on Facebook.com.
