Every once in a while, you are treated to a Bollywood movie that exceeds your expectations and you find yourself in awe of the experience it capable of providing. ‘Kaabil’ is one of those movies.
Kaabil is not your usual run of the mill Bollywood potboiler; which is quite evident, if you’ve watched the trailers. Having said that, it’s also one of those movies that are much better than the trailer portrays it to be. At its core, the movie is a revenge saga that revolves around a love story, which is very different than recent Bollywood releases. These two things go onto define the movie. But, what makes it really tick is Roshan’s moving performance.
Written by Sanjay Masoom and Vijay Kumar Mishra, the screenplay is very tightly woven and will keep you hooked. The story has the both the leads meeting each other very early on, and everything is happy and glee.
They go on joyful dates and sooner are found taking long-term commitment vows with each other.
And, then things take turn for a worse.
The movie’s turning point is when Hrithik’s character transforms from a helpless state to the one of a husband seeking vengeance. This is where things get more interesting.
These are the kind of story arcs that the director Sanjay Gupta is very capable of handling, and he executes it splendidly.
Kaabil has its shortcomings, but not in plenty. The movie can fall prey to certain clichés like corrupt cops displaying apathy towards the victims, politicians with deep pockets who game the system and local goons doing what they do best. But, that doesn’t take away the entertainment value of the film. Ronit Roy in the film dons the arc of his character like a tailor-fitted suit and can be menacing.
Hrithik Roshan’s character is emotionally battered by tragedies that hits him one after the other. This leads to a metamorphosis of sorts in Roshan’s character and we are graced by the presence of a protagonist who has his sight set on vengeance (no pun intended). Roshan’s character uses his blindness to his advantage to challenge to the crooked cops and manages to be ahead of them at every curve.
This latest bollywood drama movie manages to capture a sense of modernity in its story telling, that will attract the younger generation to the theatre, yet doesn’t seem to alienate the ones who are used to Bollywood potboilers.
Roshan’s prowess helps put life into his character and manages to captivate the audiences with his acting chops.
The movie Kaabil can at times come across as a caricature but it isn’t. If you are yet to see this film, then go into the theatre without a shadow of doubt, cause this one is truly a bang for your buck.
