Human Rights Action Center & Douye with the Founder Jack Healey
Posted on at
The founder of the Human Rights Action Center answers our questions about their current projects and the film Douye, which you can find on the Film Annex website.
1) What is the history and the mission of Human Rights Action Center?
HRAC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in Washington DC, set up in 1994 to campaign for the printing of the universal declaration of human rights into the passports of governments; fund small, effective human rights groups, help with the Aung San Suu Kyi/Burma campaign to bring her to rightful place in Burma and be a creative force when needed in the human rights movement.
2) What kind of communication tools do you use in order to reach people all over the world and let them know about your projects as well as human rights issues in general?
HRAC uses YouTube as well as film, concerts, and albums. Along with the US campaign for Burma, we send people to visit the refugee camps and lobby the Hill in Burma.
3) You have an extensive blog section on the HRAC website where you talk about many topics from the state of Burma to the state of the American government. In your opinion, what is the role of the internet and the new media in spreading awareness about important issues that are being overlooked by so many people?
The Blog of HRAC is used to make known the views of its directors and what HRAC is doing on a monthly basis. Jack Healey files a monthly column, mainly on human rights issues.
4) Can you say a few words about the film Douye and what went into the making of this film?
The film 'Douye' along with the album 'For the Lady' by Rhino/Warner Records was produced by Jack Healey of HRAC for the support to the USA Burma campaign. It includes roughly 30 minutes of the history of Burma and in particular of Aung San Suu Kyi as well as a look into her supporters in music, politics and film. It also highlights the human rights abuses of the Burmese junta.
