Angelina Jolie responding to a question from US News program “60 Minutes” on how she has changed since becoming a UN Goodwill Ambassador from her days as self-admitted drug-abuser and woman living on the edge. Whatever we may consider her eccentricities and life on the edge, Jolie has been one of the most active UN envoys speaking on behalf of the UN Refugee Agency – UNHCR – and millions of the globe’s most desperate and disenfranchised. She has also taken film and art into the arena of her work on behalf of victims of conflict and nature. In the next month her directorial debut will be featured in the film: “In the Land of Blood and Honey.” (Top Photo from Movie Set – Others over 10 Years of UN Service). It is a film about the ethnic cleansing and crimes committed during the conflict targeting Bosnia & Herzegovina, and particular its women and girls. The film has raised controversy, and I’m in no position to give my opinion as to theme or art. Nonetheless, the film does serve to remind of the yet un-remedied and ongoing injustices of the war and its persistent consequences. Most would prefer that we forget about genocide, mass rapes and forced displacement, but the film thrusts Bosnia & Herzegovina back closer to the forefront. Rather than focus now on whether Jolie’s film is accurate or even potentially insensitive, I urge those representing victims’ groups and those seeking a better Bosnia & Herzegovina to employ the spotlight for these legitimate goals.
