In Gaddafi’s Death No Virtue. By Ambassador mo

Gaddafi died a personality cult rather than death of a real leader. His vow that he would die rather than surrender was only true to that moment he found himself facing the muzzle of a gun. Those that did fight to the end and not surrender were so many of his soldiers. With them, they wasted the lives of thousands of innocent civilians as well as many fighters of the new Libyan Government. Gaddafi seemed to never consider the suffering and death of others when he made the vow to fight to the end, I suspect because he thought that he would have at least one more loyalist to stand between himself and his enemies. When he was finally found, Gaddafi was still hiding – avoiding the responsibility of a leader to bring early to an end a hopeless fight that was consuming needlessly so many lives and his country’s resources. Whether killed by cross-fire or some more purposeful coup-d'etat, till the end in his eyes it was still only about him. He apparently had his gold revolver in hand but rather than fire it, only then he opted to plead for his life. A true leader of a country would have given up his hold on absolute power in order to save the citizens and state so much death, suffering and destruction. Of course though for Colonel Gaddafi, long ago before the revolution this had become only about him and perhaps his immediate family. He could not see himself and had no identity other than despot of Libya, and he could not and did not want to see a future for Libya without him as absolute ruler. That is too frequently the path of so-called revolutionaries who come to resist any change that does not incorporate them, and who under pretext of battling counter-revolutionaries try to wipe away any challenge until they are finally overwhelmed by another revolutionary tide that cannot be any longer stymied. When this revolution started a few months earlier, I thought that Colonel Gaddafi was likely to end the way of Mussolini. The two shared flamboyance, ruthlessness and lack of a true leader’s vision and now have come to share destiny as the symbols of the end of personality cult rulers. Gaddafi did not die as hero but as one avoiding responsibility – was he a coward? History will judge, but nothing virtuous in his last days or death.
