What do you do if your in laws hate you? I have a friend who is dealing with the situation 1. Because her race is different from them and 2. Because the mom doesn't want to give up her relationship with her son. Very old school and sad reasons to potentially ruin the relationship with your child and your future grandchildren but alas yes this still exists. You end up having to be around them at family events (if you get an invitation) and still act civil to a family who doesn't accept you. Some steps to try to make it work (although for the most part it most likely their fault) include: 1. Try to figure out the root of the problem and try to understand from their perspective their feelings towards you no matter how crazy and backwards it seems. 2. Act like you like them and keep trying to be nice and stay polite 3. Try to let all your good things shine when you are around them so they can't point out your negative qualities to your spouse 4. Praise the good things they do 5. Clarify misunderstandings that may arise so their is no confusion...but do this in a calm non-threatening way 6. Give them space and don't try to force them to like you 7. Make sure to talk to you spouse about it and let them know how you feel and how you are trying to deal with it. Hopefully he will also put in the effort to convince his parents to think about you differently. Things may never change if they are completely set in their ways but hey..you can't hate a girl for trying!! xx Love Mania
