hottest events in the city
From incredible restaurants to fabulous shopping, beautiful beaches to beautiful people, there’s always a good reason to visit L.A.. If you’re lucky enough to be headed to Tinseltown in the next few weeks, here are some of the hottest events taking place around the city.
L.A. Food and Wine Festival
This year marks the fifth anniversary of this fun foodie event. In the shadow of the iconic Walt Disney concert hall you’ll find tastings and demos from some of the hottest chefs in the world. The event kicks off on Thursday Aug 27 with everyone’s favorite Aussie cook Curtis Stone, who will be hosting a VIP cooking demo followed by a live tasting with chefs including Nancy Silverton of the famed Osteria Mozza. The event also features a DJ set by Questlove (of The Roots, famed as Jimmy Fallon’s house band), more than enough reason to bag tickets. Other highlights from the weekend include a Friday lunch in Manhattan Beach, with a food and wine menu created by Michael Fiorelli of Love & Salt and Zach Pollack of Alimento.
David Hockney: Painting and Photography
Venice’s L.A. Louver Gallery has a collection of the iconic British artist’s latest work, produced over the past two years in his L.A. studio. The pieces explore the relationship between painting and photography, and Hockney’s fascination with creating artworks using new technology. His ‘photographic drawings’ are created using hundreds of overlayed images to create multiple vanishing points for an almost 3D effect. At 77 years old, Hockney is an inspiration to anyone that thinks they are ‘too old’ to learn about new technology. In addition to the exhibition, David Hockney will be giving a talk at the Getty Center on September 10. David Hockney: Painting and Photography, at the L.A. Louver Gallery until September 19.
Emmy Awards
The biggest stars of the small screen gather at the Microsoft Theater in downtown L.A. on September 2o for the annual Emmy awards. Hosted by SNL alumni Adam Sandberg this year, expect plenty of silliness on a show show famous for its sometimes controversial choices – remember Conan O’Brien’s Lost-themed sketch in ’06, or Sofia Vergara’s appearance on a rotating pedestal last year? Hotly contested categories include Best Comedy, where Modern Family is looking for its 6th win in a row, and Best Drama, which sees Mad Men pitted against Game of Thrones, House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. 67th Emmy Awards, Microsoft Theater, September 20.
Street Food Cinema
Launched in 2012, this celebration of good movies, good food and good music has seen great success, with 50 events throughout L.A. in 2015. There are still plenty of Saturday nights left to catch some classic movies before the season wraps up at the end of October with a showing of the horror comedy Shaun of the Dead on Halloween. We’re looking forward to an ’80s double bill spectacular of Some Kind of Wonderfuland Fast Times at Ridgemont High at Exposition Park on September 26, with food by Baby’s Badass Burgers (among others) and music by City City. Grab your picnic blanket and find a spot on the grass for a evening of nostalgic summer fun
