Satellite remote sensing is becoming more readily available for use in precision agriculture. The
Landsat and the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites carry instruments that can be used to determine
crop types and conditions, and to measure crop acreage. The Advanced Very High Resolution
Radiometer (AVHRR) carried onboard NOAA polar orbiting satellites measure reflectance
from the earth’s surface in the visible, near infrared, and thermal infrared portions of the
electromagnetic spectrum. Figure 6 on page 9 shows a typical image obtained from this satellite.
