“INSTEAD OF A ‘HIGH-5,’ GAZA KIDS GET FINGER,” By, SUSAN SACIRBEY

Until today, July 28, the Olympic Torch shone brightly over the children of Gaza as they smashed three world records -- the highest number flying parachutes from the ground, the largest number of people dribbling footballs, and creating the largest ever hand painting --- over the past several weeks at the fifth annual UNRWA Summer Games. Today is supposed to be another statistic-breaker as these determined youngsters attempt to beat the World’s kite flying record. Despite UN flag burning and a stage torching, the GAMES WILL GO ON, and I have every hope and confidence that these children will prevail. (Please see my first report of a few days ago “Gaza Kids High-Five the World!” when I hoped to report FOUR world records broken in all glory today.) UN News Centre & UNRWA Source: “The United Nations has condemned an attack on its summer camp facility in Gaza and vowed that an attempt by thousands of Palestinian children to break a world record for kite flying will go on as planned today. According to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), 10 men attacked and vandalized the facility in northwest Gaza early Thursday. The attackers damaged a large billboard, burnt a UN flag and torched part of the stage. None of the UN security personnel at the venue was harmed, the agency added. “We condemn this attack, which is an attack on the children of Gaza as much as on the United Nations,” UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness said in a statement. “We call on the authorities in Gaza to investigate and bring those responsible to account. We will repair and rebuild the damaged infrastructure and go ahead with the event as planned today,” he added. As part of this year’s Summer Games, more than 12,000 children will attempt to smash the world record for kite flying today. This is the fifth year that UNRWA has organized the Summer Games – which include sports, arts and other activities – to provide a recreational outlet for an estimated 250,000 children in Gaza. This year’s games coincide with the fifth year of the Israeli blockade of Gaza.” Details on the perpetrators of injustice have not come in yet. Was it a random act of vandalism, jealousy of the winners, antagonism at the United Nations presence --or something deeper? Adults have much to learn from these kids in their efforts at peacebuilding and perseverance. “Tolerance” must be the buzzword in all its semantics and in all languages for world peace, security, and justice. ---By, Susan Sacirbey Become a Facebook Fan: “Diplomatically Incorrect” and “Diplomat Artist” Follow on TWITTER@ : DiplomaticallyX Related Film & Blog Reports: “Gaza Kids High-Five the World!” By, Susan Sacirbey: diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/gaza-kids-high-five-the-world-by-susan-sacirbey/32590 “Gaza Water”: diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/movie/gaza-water/25814 Diplomat Artist Channels: diplomaticallyincorrect.org/c/diplomat-artist Humanitarian Channels: diplomaticallyincorrect.org/c/humanitarian
