Iowa Caucus Biggest Winners & Losers, by Ambassador mo

Rick Santorum and Christian right have won and Mitt Romney does not look as certain in gaining the Republican nomination as he perhaps did to some just 24 hours earlier. (As of 1:20 AM, Santorum and Romney were 18 votes apart for the lead, but it really does not matter so much who wins as that of tonight Santorum has clearly established himself as the anti-Romney candidate around whom the evangelical right will combine). Every other Republican that drops out only makes Santorum stronger by the process of elimination and efforts of conservative political evangelicals to get others to withdraw in favor of coalescing support and votes around the one chosen candidate. Rick Perry all but dropped out tonight and Michelle Bachmann probably will follow soon – she was born in Iowa but finished last of those who contested. All of these votes will now overwhelmingly swing to Santorum, with not so subtle urging of the pastors of the far right. (Read – “Religious Vote in Iowa & Egypt” - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/religious-vote-in-iowa-egypt-by-ambassador-mo/43353). Newt Gingrich is angry because he though he was just about to grab the ring when Mitt Romney supported adds tore into his checkered record and credentials as champion of morality and family values. He will have to also drop out soon, although an ongoing candidacy does help him sell more books and book paying speaking engagements for the future. Ron Paul is doing about what was expected despite being savaged by most of his fellow Republicans for his too isolationist policy. A few decades earlier, isolationism would have garnered broad Republican support - indeed it was an American standard. (Read: -"The Un-warrior - Return of the Jedi Ron Paul" - diplomaticallyincorrect.org/films/blog_post/the-un-warrior-return-of-the-jedi-ron-paul-by-ambassador-mo/43121). Mitt Romney’s Sisyphus Dilemma – He Cannot Get the Boulder Over the Top! Mitt Romney now will not only have to face a rapidly unifying evangelical core that finally has anointed the anti-Romney and momentum for Rick Santorum, but a race that is likely to continue for some time. While polls will still show Romney leading in New Hampshire and beyond, it will be the beyond that will come to be ever more difficult for Romney and his backers in the Republican establishment to get the nomination over the top. It may appear that Mitt Romney has done better tonight in Iowa than he did 4 years ago (2008) when he finished second to then evangelical right favorite Mike Huckabee. However, Romney has captured almost exactly the same number of Iowa votes tonight as then. Biggest Loser as Party Divides and Libertarians Splinter Away? The Republican Party is the big loser looking now at a more likely long and divisive battle pitting the evangelical right against the moderates. The libertarians, a shrinking but still one long standing base of the Republican Party since and before John Wayne, will continue their passionate embrace of Ron Paul. It is probably also more likely tonight that Paul and core backers launch a third party candidacy. After the blood that will be spilled, Romney will find it ever more difficult to draw the evangelical right core to come out and vote for him even if they will not also vote for Barak Obama. Santorum, if he wins the nomination, will not appeal to a broad enough base within the broader American electorate – his quote of “thank God – that his supporters cling to their Bible and their gun” does not appeal to many Americans including mainstream Christians.
