Iraq-Kuwait Invasion Outstanding Issues Still, by Ambassador mo

Ironically in week that US military is concluding operations in Iraq, the UN Security Council was reminded of still unresolved/outstanding issues related to the early 1990’s invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein’s regime (and then first US/Allied intervention - Desert Storm). UN Security Council called on Iraq (December 15, 2011) to identify/clarify the whereabouts of Kuwait’s national archives which had gone missing since the 1990 invasion. The UNSC expressed concern that “no substantial progress” has been made towards clarifying the fate of the archives and that previous calls for greater efforts had yielded limited results. The UNSC did though welcome the Iraqi Government’s approval of an inter-ministerial committee to lead and coordinate efforts regarding the archive. The issue of missing persons, particularly Kuwaiti or third-country nationals was also raised. The UNSC issued its Statement after being briefed by Ambassador Gennady Tarasov by UNSG Ban Ki-moon’s High-Level Coordinator for the issue of missing Kuwait and third-country nationals and property, on Mr. Ban’s latest report on the issue.
