Is “Occupy Wall Street” Stagnating"? By Ambassador mo

Occupy Wall Street caught many people’s imagination with a flash. Discontent has been the theme, whether falling under the broad complaint of corporate greed or Wall Street excess. Organized labor but also various personalities and the range of demographics came to join/show solidarity with Occupy Wall Street. Being against the current state of matters in corporate and political arena though cannot indefinitely substitute for a program around which a large majority of the discontented can coalesce and work for change. It is necessary that one be for something beyond dissatisfaction with the current situation in order to become a vehicle for change that can carry through to the next stage. A forward looking set of proposals and program to achieve such must become part of a platform. Is Tea Part Valid Precedent/Model? Part of the problem is that the coalition that stands behind “Occupy Wall Street” has a very broad agenda ranging from foreign policy issues to financial regulation. Nonetheless, such could be projected in a contiguous range of demands, although presumably some prioritization at least in terms of time objectives would be necessary. The greater problem could be though that one of the more active/louder core elements has a distinctly anti-capitalist, (or some might argue – anarchist), ideology, while others want to work within the current economic system through more effective regulation and legislative changes. The Tea Party can be perceived as a model for moving from protest to program, or some may see it as a bad example of how discontent was co-opted by a narrow constituency. (Perhaps it is fair to argue that the Tea Party is still not so much about a proactive program as it is united in its antagonisms. Some would contend that the Tea Party protesting the current trend has actually been taken over by the establishment). Unity Over Programs? For fear of shattering unity and the current broad coalition, perhaps decisions are being put-off. Some could be finding it more difficult to recognize the road forward even as they are certain as to what they do not like in the current course of America. Unfortunately though opportunity tends to dissipate before it can be recognized in political activism. Undoubtedly some not enamored with the protests are waiting for time and weather to wear down both resolve of and focus upon “Occupy Wall Street.” "What Will You do to Change it?" America has more than demanded that individuals take responsibility for their own destiny. That is no different for those who may have legitimate grievances regarding the status quo. However, beyond complain or protest the next question will inevitably be “what will you do to change it?” Guillotining the past without providing thought to the future may not be particularly appealing to most, and Americans are not inclined to follow head first without evaluating the alternatives.
