Is Parkour a Real Sport?

Posted on at

www.SportAnnex.com A certain online encyclopedia (which will go unnamed) defines a Sport as, "an organized, competitive, entertaining, and skillful activity requiring commitment, strategy, and fair play, in which a winner can be defined by objective means." It goes on further to say, "It is governed by a set of rules or customs. Non-competitive activities, for example as jogging or playing catch are usually classified as forms of recreation." Now parkour certainly lacks "being governed by a set of rules or customs" and to my knowledge, besides video contests there really is no such thing as organized parkour competition. Or am I wrong? Does this mean that parkour isn't a sport? It certainly can take as much if not more athletic ability than any other given sport. Does not having a governing body alone make something not a sport? Parkour certainly require commitment, training and skill. Its is physically intense, but does its own free and unorganized nature make it, "just recreation"? Perhaps it may even be better that parkour isn't a "real" sport. Recreational activities avoid the bureaucracy that have become associated with some sports. What do you think? Should Parkour become more organized? Or the traceur just fine the way it is?
